Dampers are essential as when the chimney is not in use, they can be closed to prevent the heat from your home from being sucked outside through the flue.

We deal with two types of dampers: typical bottom throat dampers that install at the base of the flue and are typically controlled by a lever inside the fireplace, and chain-operated dampers which are installed at the top of the chimney and are operated via a pull chain in the fireplace.

If you find the area by your fireplace to be drafty and cold, it is likely a problem with a missing or improperly closed damper that is letting the heat out.
